TRAINING METHODS

Dog Training is an unregulated industry. Methods used on dogs range from reward-based to punitive methods. Currently we know that dogs learn two ways:

1. Classical Conditioning: by association (picking up the leash predicts a walk)

2. Operant Conditioning: by consequence (a sit and a consequence for instance a reward)

No matter what training philosophy a trainer follows they always fall under one of the two ways dogs learn.

TRADITIONAL TRAINING

EFFECTS OF TRAINING METHODS

Traditional Training uses the bad stuff in training. Bad Stuff such as kicking, yelling, choking, jerking, alpha rolling, etc. The bad stuff is given to decrease a behavior or it is taken to increase a behavior. An example: Sit. The dog is hanged in the collar and air is deprived until the dog sits. To take away "air" until the dog provides the desired behavior and provide access to air until he does. The behavior will go up and therefore the behavior is increased.
